Well if feels pretty soft to me.
And if it takes shit to make bliss,
well I feel pretty blissfully."

    artist statement
Slinger: i got a few emails responding to this piece and i responded to one these thoughts and figured id share here:

In terms of the mixed media piece i posted, there are several meanings and
reasons behind it. For one, it is definitely open to interpretation. But
if you ask me i had many reasons behind making this piece. For starters,
ive always wanted to make art out of my glass trash. You know the ol
saying, one man's trash is another man's art. All the times ive stood over
a "messy" glass bench, and have had friends come thru and pick thru my bench
and tell me how all the glass scraps were so "pretty". I originally wanted
to just make panels to hang on the wall like paintings, but they would be
shallow "boxes" full of my "glass trash". I wanted to make a tryptch or
something. I wanted to make my trash beautiful. Frame it. Then i thought
about how personal such a piece is. All that glass in there is rejects from
refined finished work, and i realized, hey, i think i make alot more trash,
scraps, mistakes, and experiments then i do actually finished work. So to
me, all this "glass trash" is the REAL me. The fancy pipes i make are an
illusion of what i wish the public to see of me, but really, this pile of
"glass trash" is more me than a finished bubbler is. I make more mistakes
then i do finished artwork. I have also been collecting all sorts of objects
to make sculptures and i have been collecting mannequins. My idea about
this whole project kept morphing and then last minute after a couple of
other experiments i made this big coffin like box and dumped all my saved
glass into it. I was staring at some mannequins in my studio and they just
spoke to me, they wanted to jump in the box and be with the glass trash, so
i obeyed. Involving mannequin parts was a last minute decision, it just
naturally evolved that way. Does it represent me swimming in this see of
glass shards, some beautiful, others sharp and ready to cut you?? i dont
know..... another interpretation i had was that it is relatively hazardous
to your health to blow glass; all the glass dust in the air, and etc, cant
be good for humans, so i figured, maybe, like modest mouse says, "the good
times are killing me".... making all this glass, am i ruining my health
while enjoying myself?? isnt life like that, that things that are enjoyable
like drugs for instance can feel so good but in the end do so much damage??
also, this piece was featured in an art show of mostly nice refined glass
headpieces, so i figured, with this piece i could show the general public
another side of the glass pipe scene they dont see, i.e, all the crap we
throw away after making the nice headdie.... i dunno, i could rant about art
all day, but thats what keeps it fun i guess

  • Slinger
    well....
Slinger: first go back and read the artist statement a few comments above. then to answer your question, yes there are actually glass pipes involved in this piece, hence it is posted on glasspipes.org. It might be a little bit over your head, its basicly neo-post modern glass pipe art.

    ------->>
Slinger: well go ahead and express yourself, thats why i allow comments in my gallery in the first place. id even like to hear more about what you dont like about it then what you do like about it (if you like it at all). Otherwise according to your above statement of wondering why this is on a "glasspipe" site, with that in mind, i should remove any pics i have of marbles or jars and none of us should include anything that you can't literally smoke on. So yea, either your hating on my piece by taking the time to actually type such a base reaction, or it was over your head and you are confused. Id guess some of both.
