Here's some pictures of my current studio set up. It's usually not this clean, but I thought I'd take some pics before it gets dirty again.

I know the "hood" looks a little ghetto

But I really want a Mirage...

I love my kiln too!
I was going to use it, but didn't want to fuck with a hood and duct work
I just use it for extra space
I still want more sizes though
I built this baby for less than $15
Could use another set of halogens though
Some of them are going to be christmas presents
Only $9 for this brick! It's a pound

Thanks for looking at my galleries! I've been lampworking full time since December '05. I am mainly self taught and I owe a lot of what I've learned to this website and the melting pot. Thanks to all of you who have been so helpful along the way. Feel free to use the "contact artist" button to inquire about custom work.

Ventilation
I can't tell you for sure, but from what you say...I'd guess that your ventilation is not adequate. A good way to test this is with a simple smoke test. Get some incense and light it and let it burn right in front of your torch. A smoke bomb works better if you can find one. Or if you smoke cigarettes, light one or more and let them burn in front of the torch. If the fan sucks absolutely every last bit of smoke right out the window before it has a chance of getting anywhere near your mouth, then you are pretty safe. The more powerful the fan, the better. You want a lot of suction. If possible, you want the airflow to be coming from straight behind you (your intake air source is behind you) and flowing straight out the window in front of your torch. This isn't always possible, but it's the ideal setup for airflow.
From what you say, my guess is your fan is not very powerful...though I can't be sure. The fact that your only setting it on low also makes me think you're not doing yourself any favors. So maybe do yourself a favor, and go down to home depot and buy yourself an attic fan that can get at least 800-1000 cfm. It'll cost $50-60 or so. Then mount that on some plywood that you can mount in your window. You really can't overdo it with ventilation, so if you find something more powerful, get it! Spend the extra money, it's totally worth it. The last thing you want is to be breathing silver fumes.
