got me a free kiln... but will it work ? Okay so first off So somehow I got into talking to my mom about blowing glass an I brought up Im looking where to buy kilns even to check prices locally.. an pretty much my moms says "oh didnt I bring one of them back from philly (grandparents house)" an the search though my basement began lol. My grandparents used it to do ceramics an really it hasent been turned on in maybe 10 years. I dont see why it wouldnt operate they kept everything they owned in great shape (I havent tried to turn it on yet its 240volt an no spot to plug it in YET! . So this is part of my foundation for blowing. Some good luck an having somewhat artists in family has sure helped me out. BUT Okay I know its a dumb question , all my instints have told me it'll work for firing glass though a part of me isnt sure some reason because its so damn old early 80's old!!.. But it was stricky used for pottery. So im kinda asking a Question with this page , if this kiln works should I be all set to do glass with it ? Im 99% sure but Im a newb

My name is John from NH, I been buying glass since I was a teen, really have had big passion for the art & work was put into them, some day really interested in learning how to blow my own glass (would only make sence) just my life hasent put me much around people who know the torch.. hopefully someday that will change even like to take lessons somewhere, but until then I collect & admire. Most of what i collect is artists from here an some unknowns from festivals I just liked.

Thanks for looking.

if it ramps and hold
1200 then its good.

You might need to clean it out a little bit to get the pottery residue out. but if you can get it to ramp that high which you should be able to then its all good in the hood. an anealer this large can be a hassle to use you might need to find a way to cut a doggie door in it or something.

.
this kiln looks like its in great condition and should work great...however, its not ideal for a beginner. I bought a kiln just like this second hand when i started to blow glass but after a couple months i sold it and got a little digital paragon F-120 with a guillatine door and a punty flap...youd be much better with that kiln and there are a lot of people out there who would be happier with the one youve got. by the time you get a digital controller built in there youll probably be wanted something else. youd be surprised what you can probably get for that. i bet if you really tried, you could get 7-800. Just my 2 cents. Good luck!

thanks for the comments
Okay so yeah, i highly doubt it has asbestos but some things did come to light , OBV a smaller kiln will work better for me to start. One day I hope to make peices big enough to fit in there. But atleast I know in the future I can work some bigger peices I guess is a nice fact... so Im gonna look around for something smaller an newer an digital. But really thanks everyone for your input.. I hope to be blowing glass soon enough..

Also should I continoue to look around locally for kilns .. how is the shipping an handling on them if i buy one from say ABR . ? my guess is Ill pay out the ass to mail somthing that heavy .. but not sure.. with some luck I can find a semi local place to get a decent digital to start out.

thanks again everyone for input.
