The Michigan Project

The Michigan Project

Welcome to the first and original Michigan Project that was started to support and unite the glass art community here in the beautiful state of Michigan. We strive to include any and all artists who have the same passion and love for our home state that we do. It is a goal of ours to include any and all artists who want to participate - no discrimination against glass art medium choice, personality or where you're from. The only requirement we have, is that you are passionate about making a positive change in Michigan by utilizing your creative outlet of glass art.

We are proud to announce upcoming glass events in Michigan and exhibit our resiliency and passion for how we, as glass artists, can make a positive change here in Michigan!

<<< READY FOR WAR >>>

<<< READY FOR WAR >>>

Mayan themed Sword, with a Black Sun bowl encompassed by an Ouroboros. Opposite of that is the Mayan Sun Disk. The blade is blasted on both sides to add an optical effect. Total length of the piece is over 25 inches with a 14 to 15 inch blade.

I made this sword back in 2009. Upon taking it out of the sandblaster, I noticed a crack on the surface of one of the horns. I later fixed it in the flame, but due to the piece being sandblasted and reworked, it was left too unclean (for me) to sell... so I kept it. Then in early 2010, when I started electroplating, a collector and friend of mine wouldn't stop asking me to plate over the scar finish it for him, so I finally hooked him up!

This was my first electroplated Glass Sword. Lamp worked and blasted in 2009, plated and finished the first week of April in 2010.

Yesterday marked the competition of my 9th year in lampworking. BIG thanks to all who've shown me love throughout the years. It's not taken for granted.

~Royal Sceptre~

~Royal Sceptre~

Sceptre, also spelled Scepter, is an ornamented rod or staff borne by rulers on ceremonial occasions as an emblem of authority and sovereignty. The staff of command belonged to God as well as to the earthly ruler; there were the old man's staff, the messenger's wand, the shepherd's crook, and, derived from it, the bishop's, and so on...

Scetpre length is approximately 17 inches long. The gem at the tip is 40mm round.
Made in March of 2010.

CUPRUM

CUPRUM

Copper plated Mayan Sun Disk Slide.
This was the first piece in a series I've been making since back in early 2010, shortly after I began experimenting with copper plating. The focus of this series is to blend imagery from the Native Cultures of South America into the modern world of the functional Glass Art Pipe, to flourish a series of pieces that is most deserving for the era of 2012.

The largest mass of elemental copper weighed 420 tons and was found in 1857 on the Keweenaw Peninsula in Michigan, US.

Many more to come, thanks for looking!

Crouching Tiger

Crouching Tiger

According to the Chinese Zodiac the year of the White Metal Tiger began in February 2010. That year proved to be very ferocious for me. Due to it's ferociousness I've only shared a few pieces from 2010, so I've decided to now unleash my 2010 body of work here on GP for those who haven't seen it.

Hand made Glass Sword Pipe with Metal Chappe. 25 inches in length. The calligraphy on the blade reads "Metal Tiger". 2010 was also the year I started adding electroplating to my repertoire. Thanks Ghost, ETR, and especially Brandon Martin for your advice on plating.

All of the themes I choose for my Glass Weapons are personal to me.

I know there have been a few CHAMPS posts already but, these are the only pics I have of my second and third Sword pipes and I wanted to share them. So I decided to share my photos of other artist’s work from the show as well, and not exclude them. My Chinese Tai Chi and Japanese Bushido Swords were finished on 3/16 before I flew out. It was good meeting a lot of you out there. I had a blast!

I’m not sure who created some of the artwork below so please comment and let me know the Artist/s and I’ll add their name. Or if any pieces were collaborations and I left out a name.

This is my fist Sword pipe. The Blade is around 11 inches with faceted edges and tip for that sharp feel... It definitely can impale. The images are blasted on both sides of the blade so when it's moving it looks holographic. The carb was designed to look ornamental, matching the marb opposite of it so the flow of symmetry is uninterrupted.

I feel like I was sub-consciously thinking Clash of the Titans when making this. I'm not much into movies anymore, but that was one of my favorites as a kid.

Hella Dope remix - Jerry’s Revenge!
This piece combines 2D sandblasted imagery with three dimensional sculptural works to create one image.
The horns create a tripod so it stands on its own. They are wide enough apart so it’s not wobbly either… very sturdy.

In the original baphomet image his arms bear the Latin words SOLVE (dissolve) and COUGULA (congeal).
Jerry's arms bear the words ROCK & ROLL! It's kind of hard to see in these pics though.

1Love

1Love

These are the first few pieces of the year. The 1love stencil I made from the one dollar bill is very symbolic for me. To many the root of all evil is money. Putting together the word Love and placing it OVER the 1 to me symbolizes attacking evil at the root with the only thing that will destroy it, Love. Also the completion of Love OVERpowering evil.

I hope that by spreading this message through my glass I will encourage others to do just that.
A good friend once told me that it is not hate that is the opposite of love, but fear.

Death-goddess

Death-goddess

Tantric Death-goddess Kali Ma,
Indian, 17th century.
In many areas woman really did cannibalize the dead, with the benevolent purpose of becoming pregnant with their spirits and so giving them another birth. Even when cannibalism was replaced by symbolic imitations, such as rituals of sacrifice and communion, the Death-goddess was still represented by corpse eating creatures like vultures, crows, dogs, and swine.

2007 is dead

2007 is dead

This is the last piece of 2007 made on New Year’s Eve. In the summer of ’07 a good friend of mine died from a heart attack. He was a shop owner from a small town in the south west corner of Michigan on the lake. When I first started blowing glass in ‘03 my girlfriend suggested I take some stuff down to him. She grew up there and was friends with his daughter who also died in ’07 a month before him by suicide. Ever since we met he had my back on the glass tip. If all other sources were tapped out and I needed loot, he would always buy what I had even if he didn’t need it. This guy was old school about pipes. I literally never saw him without a pipe in his mouth or in his hand. He had more traditional wooden and carved pipes than glass pipes. This piece here is a glass version of that traditional style of pipe with the black stem and flattened mouth piece. Three other people close to me and my family died in 2007 so it seemed fit to end the year with an image of Death himself.

~Graal flame dubler with sand blasted white horns~

Celebrating 4 years of blowing glass. First time I fired up my torch was on St. Patrick’s day 2003 around 8:00am. I was up all night from the day before setting up the finishing touches in my shop. Back then I knew little about the scene and its history. Besides Adam G who was teaching me I only knew of Jason Lee and Clinton from pics in magazines. After I began I quikly learned about Mike Fro, Marcel, Ease and others. All of you have been a big influence for me since the beginning. This past year has been the busiest for me with glass, and family being my first year of fatherhood. In that year Bearclaw, Marbleslinger, Banjo, Smiley, Eusheen, and Pakoh have had a huge influence on me and have changed the way I approach glass.

Big props and thanks to all of you :)

  • Korey
    what up Dan
Korey: I use tremclad metal paint for my stands, the one I use has a textured finish to it. I"l put the stand in the kiln for half a minute before I spray it, the paint bakes on this way, I don't get any paint chipping off.

    hope that helps, peace

  • Privaron
    Wow
Privaron: With all honesty those swords are hands down the neatest glass I have ever seen.

I have had multiple pieces made after many characters in the manga series Bleach before and honestly have many times thought of how a smoking piece could be incorperated into a sword than I stumble on this man..

Utter magic.. Please let me know if you would ever be willing to make a custom sword.

Honestly let me put it like this if I had one piece of glass to buy for the rest of my life functionality be damned it would be something on that level.

And frankly those two swords alone your hands down my new favorite artist glass or otherwise. I have been refreshing the page just to look at how awesome that thing is multiple times today.
