hmm...?

hmm...?

Posted by Smiley on 11/19/2006
Has anyone else noticed that virtually every piece that hits the front page gets a feature nomination or is featured...?

Maybe we should all chill on hittin' that old button a lil' bit...(Myself included)

I think we need to set the bar a little higher on what we deem feature nomination or feature-worthy.

Peace

" I suddenly became stangely inebriated. The external world became changed as in a dream.Objects appeared to gain in relief; they assumed unusual dimensions;and colors became more glowing .Even self-perception and the sense of time were changed. When the eyes are closed, colored pictures flashed past in a quickly changing kaleidoscope. After a few hours, the not unpleasent inebriation, which had been experienced whilst I was fully conscious, disappeared. What had caused this condition ?"

Smiley: Yeah ,I'm not singling anyone in particular out....just a general observation.....
And yeah-there has been a lot more amazing work posted this past year... stuff that definitely warrants featuring...
But the better we all get the higher we should set the bar.....
    Peace........!!

Billygoat: must be rough.... im gonna start trying to feature those that arent popular that i think deservee features it definately is all about a few artists on this site if you ask me just my 2 cents im not a hater folks are mad good on here but its a select few that get featured regularly

  • Jp Toro
how does one even become a level 3?
Jp Toro: been on here for a long time, and still can't feature if I wanted to! but I definitely agree that the feature privilege is taken too far at times for sure! check out the # of hits some posts get---that to me is a more telling sign---maybe that would be a better system!

    .....
Smiley: Yup-a lot of us have been kinda trigger happy w/the features and whatnot...sometimes it's more of a Nod to the Artist from a admirer or friend rather than the piece itself.
Before all the Mod stuff, you used to have make some really crazy stuff to get featured-but a lot of cool shit was over looked too.
So i guess it's all about the middle ground.....

  • Abel Vicente
    um yah
Abel Vicente: the whole thing is funny to me i cant feature anything myself only level two, but all the time a see simple little pieces featured or things that arent even pipes get featured? not knocking artwork at all, but this is glasspipes.org not glassartists.org right? and then i see really nice things sometimes that dont get featured! But there is know way to stop it two many people are in control, and as far as the favoritism goes, well everybody has there favorites so its gonna happen. Actually JPs idea about the # of posts is a good idea, but not quite sure how it could work though because if the piece isnt featured it only stays on the front page for a day, and pieces that are featured stay longer so the hits go up!

we could be a little feature happy but,
Jason Lee Glass: WOW GUYS, this last year has been awe inspiring with the surge of improvement in skill and presentation by artisans in our field.

...and if the work rules, it should get featured, effort deserves recognition.

if we need distinction between levels of "featuredness" maybe we could add a "hall of fame" for the most epic pieces.

Props to all of y'all bringin it in '06!!!

Variety is the Spice of Art
Pipe Dreams Glass Studio: A lot of times I vote for lesser known artists with a lot of pride in their work. Seems its always the top 25 that get featured. Its nice to see artwork and inspiration from ALL skill levels, especially newer artists who appreciate the feedback from experienced artists, rather than being all about flattery. Not that I'm a hater, the top 25 are a bunch of kickass artists, but we check their sites out anyway. It would be nice to see a variety of hardworking talent get appreciated, is all.

Dickey: When one single person hits the "Nominate" button, does the button disappear for others to nominate also? I don't know....

    ***********************
Cowboy: I only feature eusheen's work. No, really I think generally speaking, when I get on here I can see a piece and can tell if it will be featured or not. They have a look about em that stands out a bit a lot may be nominated but in the last few months the whole featuring every other piece has really slowed down, I think, And I'm not sure how to get to MOD THREE status but you should be there bu now J.P~ fo sho.

    features
Gibsons Glassworks: i think that the feature system deffinitly needs some attention. i check this site alot and i notice that the comments pile up super fast on only the crazy headies made by usually the top 25. i totally agree that there work is off the hook. but

do you think that giving a guy whos been blowin for 10 years " mad props " is really helping him out as much as some positive encouragement for those artists ( like myself) who need that little kick in the ass to continue improving.

i know for myself when a peice of mine even gets a nomination, it feels good and makes me work harder. cant wait to be a featured page, im pushing!

  • E.Ross 4.0
i like the hall of fame idea.
E.Ross 4.0: There is a lot of prodo and stuff posted on this site, so I like when a lot of the better pieces get featured. Otherwise, if you are not checking the site a couple times a day you could miss some great glass. (i've seen really great pieces that don't get featured also)

It would be nice if a small handful of pipes each year made it to a "hall of fame." Everyone would be working so hard to get those spots.

hall of fame is great idea...
AJ: my 2 cents from a level 3 mod point of view...
i didnt ask for the ability, but givin it, i do my best to only feature pieces that are what i believe to be worthy regardless of who made it.
    :)

  • Misled Youth
    hhhmmmm
Misled Youth: standards should be set for each artist.
not on this site as that would not be possible. but in our minds. i look at almost every pipe on the front page
wether there a badass or not. it is nice seeing people progress.
example- look at cowboy's work, look at all the improvements after spending time with fro.
(disclaimer_ not slammin anyone so dont take offense)
but i am happy to see someone make this post.

    The featuring
Smiley: isn't really that much of a problem-the majority of Mod 3 users can control themselves & most everything that gets featured is Sick. There's not too much "marginal work"getting featured(With an exception or two)
It's more about the nominating of ever single piece that hits the front page that's annoying-the other day we had spoons and all sorts of sub-par work nominated, and I'm not exaggerating-but every single piece on the front page was nominated or featured!
That just struck me as retarded...!

I would also like to say that most all of the Mod 3 users are definitely good judges of glass. That's why there are different Moderator levels, with different levels of control.

So-"Just because you're a glass blower doesn't make you a good judge of other glass"- while that's not exactly untrue(Always an exception to the rule), it's also not that bright of a statement either.
Who better to critique & judge glass than ones peers.

And as far as the top 25 goes-with the exception of Wood-ALL those top 25 blowers make SICK Glass, work HARD,post regularly, participate a lot, have good presentation of their work, and Really deserve their place on the top 25...!
(Sorry Wood,I'm Really not trying to be mean or a dick-so please don't take this the wrong way!-but #36 not #6 would be about right-how is it that he's #6 ??,that's had me confused for a while? )

The top 25 is not a "joke"-it could stand a little shuffling around maybe ,but for the most part it's right on...!
    "Brown nosing fame" is bullshit...!

Anyway thanks to everyone that has made this a lively discussion and gave their 2 cents.

    ~Peace
