Go BIG or stay home...

(Action Shots)

Go BIG or stay home... I was just going through my computer (and enjoying the new DSL connection) and this was what I found. It's a sequence from Project 33 back in 2004. We started by gathering 15 feet of 44mm rod on a big lathe and then picked it up on a punty and off to "Draco" (My Oxy fired glory hole). I got it hot and then handed it off to Charlie Lowry to blow the bubble. We actually made like three of these bubbles they were so friggin fun! Thanks to Scott Douglas for the pictures and of course thanks to everyone involved in the project!

Did you say "Schnitzel?"
HaHa I made schnitzel last night...mmmmhhh schnitzel

BTW. "Go big or stay home" is just an expression that I happen to use often, usually to justify doing something, shall we say, adventurous (or stupid).

I'm certainly not suggesting that anyone go home...lol

Well....
Among other things this project raised over 10,000.00 dollars for the Eugene Glass School. That is, the finished piece and post project donations did. Not to mention the donations that allowed the project to have its' operating budget which gave the artists who participated a unique and valuable experience, to say the least.

The piece shown in these pictures was hot attached to many many other components yielding a piece that definitely could not be accomplished in another medium. If you find yourself in Eugene, it is currently on display at the Eugene Glass School.

The Starship was created in just over ten days by twelve people who had, for the most part, never even met before the first day of the project. I would consider the results we ended up with a success. Certainly the primary goals: raise money for EGS, run a stimulating project, create auction centerpieces, spread knowledge and inspire experimentation were met.

I have made before and will continue to make finished pieces utilizing these technologies in my own studio. Certainly other well known artists are currently working with techniques utilized in these projects. I feel confident saying that every single person who was there while these pictures were taken would disagree with your comments.

I hope this answers your question.

-Marcel
