Story of a girl...

Story of a girl...

Posted by OrganicsGlass on 1/23/2007
This is a collaboration piece done from a sketch and an idea. This piece was made possible with help from Firefly, and a wire-wrap job by Keebler. I blew and pieced together the hollow forms, including my first donut, which took a little help to get it right. Then it cracked, and then a bunch of other cracks started popping up everywhere. I guess I was still thinking about my crazy adventure that landed me in Corvallis... That's a long story that the pipe can tell better than I can. Anyways, Firefly somehow brought it back from the dead and repaired all the cracks and added all the attatchments.

The solid spirals I sculpted separate from the piece (special thanks to Micheal of "Money glass" for the tech tips).

The fiery Millefiori chip was created by Erik Anders.

Special Thanks to FireFly for all his help getting me back on my feet..
back in the shop...
back on the torch...
and back to reality...

This piece was a therapy session.

On the side of the piece, you can see a fossilized chambered nautilus, or an "amonite." The amonite represents how Amber is now ancient history, but her memory is still fossilized and preserved in my mind.

The solid Amber color scheme represents the name of a girl I traveled out west with last year.

When the pipe is stationary, it has a laid back profile. Stationary, and laid back is how Amber wanted to live but had a difficult time transitioning to.

The pipe has a downward profile. You can also see that the pipe is covered in spirals. The downward profile, along with the many spirals, represents the downward spiral of her mental and physical well-being.

Millefiori by Erik Anders
There is a marble containing a millefiori that has two horns attatched. You cant see the milli unless you look deep into the marble. Much like Amber, there's a lot you don't see at first glance.

The horned milli-marble represents her battles with inner-demons that possessed her soul and made her act irrationally.

Led astray by the ways of the devil...

The copper that holds the amonite to the piece (wrap done by Kiebler of Corvallis, OR) represents how Amber left me scraping pennies.

Order>Chaos>Order
The sculpture on the opposite side of the piece was created to counter the wieght of the Amonite. This counterwieght, the final abstract addition to this piece, represents the balance that Amber brought to my life through complete and total chaos.

Thank goodness my heart isn't made of glass...
This piece made it easier to explain things to friends back in Georgia. It's all good though, because unlike glass, I know how to bounce back.

I have drawn influence from many of the great artists on this site, but my roots in glassblowing have evolved from several unsung heroes in the Atlanta area.

Evan "the Evangelist" and Dana
Patrick Randolph
Jack and Tara Roberts
Jason Fultz
Armin
Mag
Don and Thom Lillie

I am grateful to all these teachers for showing me the way and the incredible people I've met since moving to the Northwest for sharing with me the valuable gift of their knowledge. Some of the most important lessons I have learned from you people have absolutely nothing at all to do with glass.

Thank you, and much respect...
