While breaking down some 30/2.8, the glass slipped in my hand, cutting the inside of my thumb severely. Instantly the whole end of my thumb went completely numb and a 10 inch geyser of blood began pulse pumping all over the place. In panic, i ran from one side of the shop to the other and back , spraying blood everywhere, while screaming "we've got arterial flow..." over and over.

My name is Jason Lee and I have been working in borosilicate since 1994.
I live in Eugene, Oregon and work with Living Glassworks. I love this medium and see myself lost in it for the rest of my life.
Thanks for checking out my stuff!

"we've got arterial flow, we've got arterial flow....
i tried my usual means of dealing with the cut, but it was too deep and had glass shards still floatin around in there. ...so off to the emergency room for innitial cleansing and stiches. I found out that i had comletely severed the ulnar nerve. A few days later i went in to be assessed by the micro-surgeon who was going to try to sew the ends of my nerve back together. ...and a few day later, i went in for surgery. Anesthesia is bizarre, like a light switch. I have to wear a brace to keep the micro-nerve-staples from tearing out. the nerves will heal in 6-10 months if it works, but equally, i may never get sensation back in my thumb. i'm out of work till mid or late december which sucks alot.
KEEP POSTING, your creativity and inspiration help keep me goin durring this bullshit.

Leading by example,
I have cut. I have seen cut. But DAMN! I never want it that bad. I hope it doesn't affect you long term. I have been scoring my tubes then I put a bunch of water on the score. Then heat up the end of some 5-6mm and stamp the score. The tube should crack cleanly with the score. I hope your recovery is a quick one. Bummer.

I cut my right pointer finger scoring and snapping. I almost passed out and it took a good 8 months and then one day i could feel the tip again. Time to hit the drawing pad with some creative release. peace Darby

Yeooooooouch!
You told me back in the day that you considered lampworking, at a certain level, to be an extreme sport, but damn. You know Matt Hoffman won the X-games with a broken foot, so I expect to see you pull off the sickest piece you've ever made during your "break". Thumb be damned. hahaha (yes, that's a joke) Hope you have a full recovery and that it comes sooner than expected. Your work is NEEDED in this community.

SUCKS
sucks bro i did that 12 years ago to the same finger except it was a pretty long clean cut(cut myself with a utility knife on the top of my thumb, just missing the tendon...when itpulled open it didnt bleed for a second, and i saw my purple whitish tendon, then it just started raining blood.... its amazing how you experience no pain in times like those...my dad wrapped a facecloth around my thumb it was bleeding so bad..... good luck man!
