Im doing a series of pieces based on photos i took of Harajuku kids in Japan in 2008. Via an old girlfriend i got introduced to the fashion movement happening in the Harajuku District of Tokyo. The influence of 'western" culture in Japan for about 50 years has radically altered the traditional Japanese culture that preceded it. Young adults in Tokyo responded to the import of western fashion by creating their own street styles by combining contrasting ensembles of color, pattern, and genres to create their own unique expression.
Japanese photographer Shoichi Aoki publishes a monthly magazine called "Fruits" which she photographs the latest Harajuku styles. With her as my inspiration, i took to the streets of Harajuku for a week and did my own photo study. Bubbler blown by SNIC. Coldwork and stencil by SLINGER. Images
