    sorrry andy,
Jason Lee Glass: that comment wasn't directed at you, i knew you were joking.

it was the Glasstafarian who said he was gonna "kipe, chomp and bite" my shit.
any other artform, people would be embarassed and ashamed to be biters, but not pipemakers.
how can anyone be happy living out someone elses dream... where is the sense of pride and self worth in that?
why aspire to be a "cover band", when you could just write your own damn shit.

i can't stop the biters, but they could at least have the respect to not make comments like that.

when Bearclaw and JP were doing double layer stuff, i was so impressed!
despite my excitement, i waited 5 YEARS to start my own attempts, out of respect and desire to see where they would take it.

i love inspiring folks, but some people bum me out sometimes with their lack of creativity and respect for others.
it makes me think i shouldn't post my shit any more, so that i can still have a career in a few years.

thanks much to all of my friends on here who have had class, and showed positive support.

again, sorry if you mistakenly thought i meant you.
    jason

  • Chubz
    true what you said dude
Chubz: but you are the shit at working glass and instead of looking at it like everyone's biting your shit maybe think like you touch peaple in thier life enough so that they reflect it in thier work. maybe the small group of you guys are paiving the road so others can drive it...
some call it biting others call it inspiring.

anyway I mean no disrespect i love your work and I think some peaple might get disappointed if you stop posting so please keep the sick shit coming for everyone to drool over

  • Slinger
    props to Jason
Slinger: i agree with jason, there is a lack of originality in the pipe scene, sorry to sound negative, but if people would start channeling their own life experiences into their work as opposed to only being "inspired" by surfing glasspipes.org, the scene would be alot less homogenous (ie everything looks alike and reflects the next guys work),,, as of now the internet is like a gift and a curse, like how video killed the radio star... on a positive note, peace to the people that actually engage their work with their own unique energy,,,

  • Jason Lee Glass
inspiration is good, and i encourage it...
Jason Lee Glass: but replication and underselling hurts an artist no matter how you look at it.

imitation is the highest form of flattery, but flattery does not pay the bills.

it seems like most people are afraid to bring up this topic. i just want to start a dialog.

we ALL take from eachother, and i am no exception, but respect is essential or our society will crumble.
    3/19/2009 8:38 AM
  • herbC
respect is key...and you got mine
herbC: but i do gotta say im a little dissapointed to hear that the man himself is worried about paying the bills. makes me feel like im fucked! this "underground" pipe world is pretty harsh and there is no loyalty from store owners either. they act like theyre doing us a favor by buying our work when were the ones putting the effort, time, and money into a work of art that they just have to sit on. its because of us that theres even a market for pipes. just like glassblowers are a dime a dozen so are stores. and i dont need a store to sell my work! respect that! sorry for gettin off the biter subject. you just sparked me up a little. but anyway keep pushin man. you are like micheal jordan to glasspipes and your still sportin #23 on yer jersey!peace
    3/19/2009 2:27 PM
  • Glasstafarian
damn i guess i should ve checked back here sooner
Glasstafarian: was pointing out how pipers replicate and use the term "inspiration" as the polite way/excuse to copy and then show so lil humility.
to me inspiration is when you see a sunset or piece of art or what the fuck ever and are inspired to do something of your own creation. too many times i see the exact same things done with just nohter color combo.
if you check out my pieces i STRIVE to post things that are completely diffrent but honestly "inspired" by many of you.
i guess i should have told you thanks for sharing so it woudnt be so badly misunderstood...again what i was saying was not that i was goin to kipe it but that it will be by others and only confirms your sentiment. personaly im all into shapeing and i dont care much for patterns...cept alot of yours inspire me so much makes me wana switchback haha.

Voorhees: A new light through the window, very nice piece. The bowl really looks like a spiral staircase, great work!
    3/20/2009 0:35 AM
  • MNP
    on a different subject
MNP: I would like to point out that kiped should actually be spelled kieped or kieked as it's a racial slur derived from the word Kiek.

Spike Mike: you set the bar once agin
    3/20/2009 9:14 AM
  • Glasstafarian
you got to be kiddin me mnp ????
    Glasstafarian:
    kipe:
primarily regional to the American Paific Northwest. From the Old English "kip", meaning "to snatch" or "to take hold of". Probably originally from the Old Norse "kippa", meaning to "to snatch", "to tug on", or "to pull on".
    3/20/2009 9:27 AM
  • Spike Mike
Spike Mike: the best always get copied invitations come and go the best stay. I hope you continue to post I come to this site just to look at your work some times. you've brought back ancient techniques that nobody could master quite like you.(This is directed towards the the underground seen)do we all work together to advance quickly or create a glass curtain much like Italy. Glass is evolving. Boro has a lot farther to go. Take the Tec. and evole it don't just imitate
    3/20/2009 9:38 AM
  • TMB
    Hey man
TMB: Tec is for everybody. But someone telling you they are going to take your work down and work you,is not cool at all send him my way.I will bit him and on the torch or at the gym.Your a bad ass artist Jason alway know that.I am alway impressed by what you do and other here.Marble up and Pipe away.TMB

  • 2010bc
2010bc: Slinger got a point. I dont come around on a consistant basis anymore an it has helped my glass. I also would like to point out when you do copy folks work to a tee it is very unflattering. I had some pieces of mine made is china an I wasn't flattered. I can only imagine how slinger feels on the few folks (in america) who have riped him off on his blue carmel blast series.
    3/20/2009 11:49 AM
  • Jason Lee Glass
    great point brian...
Jason Lee Glass: everyone agrees that imported glass robs american artists of their livelyhood by severely undercutting prices and flooding markets.
isn't it similarly harsh when it comes from our own community?

^glasstafarian...sorry to single you out, choose your words more carefully in the future. You were the catalyst that motivated me to get this off my chest.

I've seen alot of blatant nock-offs getting featured and earning undeserved respect. I enjoy a good cover band, but i would never pay to see one while the original band still played. If someone is good enough at glass to mimic another persons style, they should take that talent and make their own statement, or at least put their own spin on the theme. it's easy to be a copycat, but a few hours of THINKING after work, instead of watching tv or surfing the web, might just release the next pioneer in you.

i love you all and i want to see our wave of creativity wash all this negativity away.

Tiny Mike: handled like a true pro you probably made him feel pretty small!you been inspirational to me for 9 years and I only got on this site 2days ago you can't stop it with or without this site just know noone could do it like U!!!!sure would love to know how its done wickedddd!!
    3/23/2009 1:12 AM
  • Blitzkriega
Blitzkriega: firstly, slinger makes a great point. the way i see it is like this. these color techniques are simply emulations of thousand year old furnace glass techniques. if one person did it, chances are someone else would have. are we all not biters because we incalmo, or pull points?? not trying to chip away at jlee glory, cuz you've always been like the authority on pipes in my opinion... BUT its like a riding a barrel. just cuz some dude was the first to ride a tube does not mean someone else would not have done it. (and the dolphins have been doing it for millenia! are humans dolphin biters???) the thing is, what sets one surfer apart from another is how they ride that barrel, i.e. personal touches/style. Thats why jlee is like the kelly slater of this jam.
    3/23/2009 7:26 AM
  • Skiin Ian
Skiin Ian: I would recognize a J-Lee piece long before examining the millifiore. (Spelling?), Super clean patterns, construction, flawless. I can usually pick out Slinger's work (blasted line) because of his wit and thought put into his depictions (the Morton salt girl) for example. The same can be said for Pakoh. Dizzle's "Swiss perk" line is sweet the disk diffuser can't be easy to add without cracking a few. Eush's symmetry and super tight wigs. Deppe's Celtic craziness. Ace's "Bitch Please" My point is keep pushing, keep posting, and don't let people drag U down. Remember how important your work is to us mortals, (even the one's with no clue, U gotta start somewhere).

    Very Sincerely
    Ian

    cover bands
Darin Mitchell: jason you gotta admit dark star orchestra is a pretty damn good cover band
    3/23/2009 1:54 PM
  • Jason Lee Glass
    darkstar kicks ass...
Jason Lee Glass: they definitly put their own spin on things... but thats why i had said "while the original band still played".

there are exceptions to all rules.
i am not trying to make rules, just encouraging thought.
    3/23/2009 2:14 PM
  • Darin Mitchell
Darin Mitchell: i know....just tryin to lighten up the subject...i will def say the opening post in this whole dialogue was worded poorly....it is hard sometimes to not take on some styles....like me for instance have esp working with me now and really have to try to figure out how to use some of the techs hes showing me without my shit starting to look like an esp knockoff....i think even if people use pattern ideas it comes down to final shaping and cleanliness that gives us all our own styles....hell maybe someone will take that spiral staircase idea and maybe switch it back to make some mc escher lookin shit....personally i aint touchin the doudle layer shit till i can figure out a pattern i havnt seen yet
    3/23/2009 4:28 PM
  • Glasstafarian
actually the first comment was deleted!!
Glasstafarian: now im not gona say who so bravely deleted and remade a more "appropriate" one.

however it said, im gona make a tube pull in those colors in your honor jlee, which is a joke in itself.

anyways, everybody has seen waynes world...he goes in to the guitar shop and starts to play stairway to heaven and the dude shows him the sign on the wall "no stairway".

i was jokeingly try to demean the act of Kopying right away, then this unfolded, but hey ill bet anyone who stops by this thread will never ever copy it hahaha.

    opinion .....................
B L U E S: i feel we all inspire each other to do what we do ............but this is a touchdown celebration people should stay away from ............props that spiral shit is so tech and such a point of endless opportunities

  • Jason Lee Glass
    huh?...???
    Jason Lee Glass: why eric?
he took extensive classes from me, bought a big headdy bub , and puts his own spin on my theme.

he showed appreciation through CASH, but "biters" show nothing but the ability to take.

    see the difference?

or do i misunderstand you mike?
    3/25/2009 10:25 AM

    just my opinion...

  • Purdy Glassworks
Purdy Glassworks: i mean..... I don't think we should be so concerned about biters. When I started working other glassblowers wouldn't talk to me, and would stop working if I was in their studio for fear of me stealing their techniques. This way of thinking just leads to a genuinely douchey attitude that I see in a lot of lampworkers. I stopped wanting to make pipes for a long time, just because I was sick of dealing with everyone's over inflated egos. I have always been willing to show anybody any of my techniques or ideas, because it makes me happy to see others learn. If you are confident in yourself and your own techniques then you shouldn't have to worry about biters.
