Collaborations

Posted by N8 on 5/27/2004
Collaborations allow artists to work together, push limits and create pieces they normally wouldn't have made on their own. They are also tough to pull off because artists usually only have one vision - their own.

2010 - Alien Incubator - Weber/Linh/BenB/N8 Collab

2010 - Alien Incubator - Weber/Linh/BenB/N8 Collab

If I'm not mistaken, I believe this piece is the pipe debut of Travis Weber and Linh. The two of them make some of the most beautiful marbles I have ever seen. Many of Travis' solid marbles start out as hollow tubing, so we thought it would be a good idea to incorporate some of those same designs onto pipes. Travis not only created the opposing spiral fume sections for this piece, but he and Linh also created a couple of really large marbles for the piece. One was actually too big to put on the piece! We also littered the piece with smaller marbles by Ben B, who also made the Alien Incubator section that makes the second bubbler can, and the one-eye carb worm. He also helped with some of the assembly. My main job was to assemble, but I also snuck in an Intergalactic Space section and pulled the Amazon Night tubing that we used for the piece.

This piece stands about 11" tall, and went together pretty smoothly, other than a few small snags early on. We had a blast making this piece, and I hope to see more hollow work by the Sebastopol Crew in the near future.

2010 - Robin Hood vs N8 - Double Space

Intergalactic Doubler Madness! We spent the last few days working on this monster to bring to Vegas - stands a little over a foot tall and weighs over 3-1/4 LBS! I was the parts factory and Nick rocked out the assembly line. We had a great time with this one - it went together perfectly, and we only had to make a few things over (and over, and over) a handful of times...lol. Thanks for looking!

2010 - BenB and N8 Collaboration

This was one of those custom requests that I didn't really feel inspired to tackle...that is, until the sea life legend himself, Ben Burton, stopped by. This was more of a warm up piece for Ben and I, and I look forward to more stylized collabs in the near future!

2010 - VOORHEES & N8

"Head Space" I worked at the Ventura shop for a few days recently and got to collab with VOORHEES. He made a face from my space prep and then I assembled it into a sherly. I had a tough time photographing the face details since it's all clear sculpture/carving work, but I assure you it's crisp!

2009 - Winter Road Trip Collaborations

Whew, it's been a crazy winter so far, and it's not even over yet! Here's some pictures to go along with my January 18th post at http://n8dogger.blogspot.com. Thanks to everyone at Flameworks in Austin, Wicked Sands and Original Glass in LA, and a special thanks to DoshWorld, BC, Lurch, Salt, Micah Evans, and Kevin Ivey.

I also did some other collabs during this road trip that aren't pictured yet, but will soon be added: Micah, Ben (of OG glass), and a Travis Weber (mail colab).

2007 - N8, Jason Lee & Lee Zeigler Collab

2007 - N8, Jason Lee & Lee Zeigler Collab

Here's the result of a recent collaboration. Lee Zeigler, Jason Lee, and myself put this together after an early morning MTB ride last week. Jason Lee brought the prep and did the assembly/shaping, Lee Zeigler did the large wrap around cane, and I did the marbles. Kind of a lot going on here in just a little bit of space but we didn't have a lot of time/energy left after the MTB ride. Thanks for looking!

2006 - Slinger/Carlson/N8 Colab

Here the three of us got together in my Oregon Studio and did the first three marbles of the Tribute Series; Robert Mickelsen, Josh Sable, and Gateson Recko. They came out pretty sweet, and I had tons of fun. More to come!

2005 - Katrina Hurrican Collaboration - Olympia WA

2005 - Katrina Hurrican Collaboration - Olympia WA

We gathered at Blue Devil's studio shortly after Hurrican Katrina hit New Orleans with intentions to collaborate and auction off anything and everything made that weekend to the Katrina Relief Fund. It was a great time and artists came from Oregon to Far north Washington State to help, and all in all it went rather well.

2005 Erik Anders and N8 Collaboration

Here is a colab Erik Anders and I completed after AGI in 2005. I spent a few days out in NY visiting Erik, and I learned so much during my visit, I feel forever in debt. Erik is a super nice dude and now runs a Glass Supply business; check it out at Vaporglass.com. Tell him N8 sent ya!

2004 PNW Colab

2004 PNW Colab

It was a small turnout at Emmett's shop in Monroe Washington, but we made two sculptures and had alot of fun.

Thanks to Tom @ Northstar, Ross @ ABR, Kristian @ Generations Glass, and Grandpa @ Profound Glass for donations. Also a big thanks to everyone who made it in attendance for the good times...especially ZEUS! This guy rode his bike mass miles in the rain to get to the colab and he brought a willing-to-work-attitude and left his ego at home. Toast to Zeus!

I'm N8, a 30-something y/o glass artist residing in beautiful Colorado. I started lampworking in 2002 and while I'm primarily self-taught, I did receive plenty of help along the way from a few good friends and the GLDG forum. Glassblowing has taken me all around our beautiful country while providing many great experiences and lifelong friendships - I wouldn't trade it for anything. The artwork shown here is not for sale and I'm not currently taking any custom requests while I pursue my own creative vision.
