I made these back in January. I've been wanting to combine the monkeys and the Munnys for quite some time. Let me know what you think.

Negative Space Series

Experimenting with copper wire and handmade jump rings. The focus is mainly on the copper plating technique itself instead of the base form of the piece. Most of the piece are very simple in form and color. The devil is in the details.

John Kobuki Marble Workshop @ Flameworks

here are some pictures from the John Kobuki Marble Workshop hosted by Flameworks here in Austin, Texas... Kobuki is an amazing glass artist who has spent more than a decade creating and perfecting the "compression" technique to design amazing glass marbles with realistic flowers, orchids, jelly fish, samurai and more... all of the students in the class had a great time and showed unreal progression... it was amazing to witness... words can not express... enjoy these images

Spirals

I usually don't write much of a description on here, but figured I'd write a bit on why I'm so intrigued by spirals in glass: The theme I seem to repeat with my work is curves and spirals. I focus on these simple shapes in my art because they can bring us closer to nature and help us set our mind free. Modern man is trapped by 4. We trap ourselves within 4 walls, a square, everywhere we look. We live in a house with 4 walls, we sit in rooms with four walls, we stare at a square television, computer, smartphone, they all trap us in a box with the #4. our western music is mostly set to a 4/4 rhythm while the song structures repeat in patterns of 4. By contrast, curves are sexy. They remind us of the shapes that occur in nature instead of our man made reality. Spirals ask us to contemplate what's deeper within or what's above and beyond. In "The spirit molecule" Dr. Strassman describes his clinical studies with a naturally occuring chemical in the body, DMT. Several of the study volunteers had strong reaction and were attraced to a woman's hair. He writes "... It was the most powerful image of living, organic, familiar reality avaible when one looked around a dreary hospital room..." These subjects while trapped in their 4 walls made by man, looked for the only natural beauty they could find as their man made reality slipped from them. The spiral is the basic principle of Nature's laws, and can be observed anywhere you look. The spiral of the conch shell. Spiral tendrils of ivy and other plants wind around porch railings and fences. Flowers form themselves in a spiral, leaves are coiled in spiral form before they miraculously unfold. Plants, grass and flowers shoot in spiral growth to literally screw their way through the hard surface of the ground, when spring calls to them. There is spiral movement in the Yin-Yang forces of the Hexagrams of the I-Ching. The spiral mysteriously seems to possess some subtle quality of its own. Wind a piece of copper wire into a spiral and it magically acquires properties it did not previously posess. The spiral used mechanically makes it possible to penetrate wood and iron. Your doctor can tell you that the spiral is discerned in many organs of the human body, and many of the body's functions operate through spiral movement. It is of more than passing significance that all of Earth's "creatures," beginning with the tiny amoeba, all the way to men and women, when they move without any means of stimulation, will be invisibly urged to take a spiral path. The horns of a Ram, all horns - are spiral. The umbilical cord is a spiral. Thumb prints are spiral. So is your humerus, the pelvis and likewise your sweat glands. The spiral appears in cell division. So follow the spirals to delve your mind deeper into life's great mysteries.
